AD Strips

A.D. Strips are paper strips that detect and measure the. Vinegar syndrome, in film collections. Developed and manufactured on dye-coated paper by the IPI (Image Permanence Institute), they enable to detect and measure the extent of deterioration - called “Vinegar Syndrome” -in acetate films and microfilms.

The Vinegar syndrome is a slow form of chemical deterioration which narrows and distorts film by releasing a strong vinegar smell. These strips change color (from blue to yellow). A reference pencil is provided to measure the levels of acidity (ranging from 0 to 3). This test not only allows to check the degrading extent of each film in a collection, but also to determine the best moment to duplicate them. This is a valuable tool to monitor the efficiency of the chosen method of conservation.
